Building Permit Information
There are a significant number of State and local construction regulations that apply to construction projects in Ventura County. Generally, all buildings and structures require a building permit from Building and Safety prior to commencing construction. There are some exceptions, such as public schools, hospitals, and water and electric utility infrastructure, which have oversight by the State of California or other agencies and are not subject to local control. Public Works projects constructed in the public right of way, such as road bridges and roadways, are also exempt from building permits. Some small projects and minor improvements on private property, such as small storage sheds, flooring, and most finish work in residential buildings, are also exempt from Building Permits.
