Military Training Routes
The United States military uses airspace corridors, called Military Training Routes, in and above Ventura County for testing and training purposes between the Point Mugu Sea Range and the Land Ranges at Naval Air Weapons Station in China Lake. These Military Training Routes provide connectivity to and from other military installations as well as ranges and operating areas.
There are two Military Training Routes located within Ventura County. These are shown in blue and red on the Map in the link below. Within these corridors, military aircraft are permitted to fly at lower altitudes and higher speeds than normally allowed.
The Board of Supervisors determined at a hearing on June 27, 2006, that any structures approved at heights above 200 or 500 feet, respectively, within the Military Training Route corridors shown on the Map, may encroach into navigable airspace, thus negatively impacting the military’s testing and training mission, and possibly presenting a safety hazard.
The Board of Supervisors directed that any structures (such as cell towers, wind turbines, or antenna) that require discretionary approval and exceed these height limits within the designated areas shall notify the Head of the Sustainability Office, NAVAIR Ranges at Point Mugu. The military will then be given 30 days to respond with any comments or concerns on the proposed structure.
